Promoted by the cooperative professional associations within the fishing sector (Federcoopesca, Lega Pesca, A.G.C.I. - Agrital), Unimar currently links their respective centres for research and technical assistance (C.I.R.S.PE., Consorzio Mediterraneo, ICR) and acts as the nucleus of the national research activities carried out by cooperative enterprises.
Companies that are part of Unimar boast important international expertise and experience that has led to the development of programmes for cooperation and technical assistance, professional training and the transfer of know-how across 47 countries. Unimar uses operational units along the entire Italian coast to carry out its activities coordinated from the Rome central office. More than 250 researchers collaborate with Unimar: technicians with international experience, biologists specialized in marine research, experts on feasibility and planning studies for aquaculture plants and on the safeguard of marine and lagoon ecosystems, all in the aim of a sustainable development of the marine environment.
Unimar and its partners collaborate with the main Italian Universities and various public bodies:

- Ministry of Environment and Territorial Protection;
- Ministry of Public Works;
- Ministry of Foreign Affairs;
- Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO);

Unimar is accredited by the Italian Government as a scientific institution (Ministerial Decree 10.3.2011) and is certified for the quality management system in compliance with the standard UNI EN ISO 9001:2008 concerning the following activities: research and development programs in the fields of fishery, aquaculture and environment.
