CRTM Asinara
The Marine Animal Rescue Centre of the National Park of Asinara and Marine Protected Area "Island Asinara" is located at the homonymous Island of Asinara, in Cala Reale. Currently, the center is located at "Casa dei Fanalisti", restored with a project co-funded by the European Union with ERDF and designed according to the patterns dictated by the guide lines of the Ministry of Environment, prepared by ISPRA for recovery of marine mammals. The recovery center, until July 2012, had headquarters in the town of Fornelli, in the National Park Centre. It was created thanks to the project "Tartanet", prepared by the CTS Environment, in collaboration with the Ministry of 'Environment and Land Protection' is placed inside an initiative Community Life 2004NAT\EN\187, with the objective to preserve, protect, conserve sea turtles in the Mediterranean, as well as experimenting with new tools to reduce the accidental capture or damage.
The Marine Animal Rescue Centre of Cala Reale has the following objectives:
• care of recovered individuals of sea turtle;
• activities to increase the awareness of fishermen, boaters and schools and users of the Protected Area, on the presence and the need for protection of cetaceans and sea turtles;
• basic and applied research in the conservation of sea turtles;
• monitoring to increase data availability and improve knowledge in relation to the protection of cetaceans and sea turtles (scientific research is carried out in collaboration with universities (University of Sassari, Turin and Siena).
In 2009-2012, more than 20 individuals of Caretta caretta have been hosted by the center.
